How to select a Map Measuring Tool
There are now a variety of electronic tools available to help you use your maps or plans/blueprints more efficiently.
Map Wheels allow you to calculate distances over any route on
a map with many basic functions included. This automates the process many
bushwalkers will be familiar with involving a piece of string, or a paper edge.
Most models come with pre-set scales as well as the ability to set your own,
along with other functions such as aggregating distances and the ability to
switch from metric to imperial units. Accurately calculating distance is
important when planning hikes or walks with topographic maps, especially in
remote areas. It is also a valuable on road trips for travellers exploring
greater distances.
A Plan Wheel goes one step further and allows you to scale plans or blueprints to any size. Used by architects, engineers and those in construction, it is a tool for estimation, construction and surveying.
There are a number of options available now allowing an interface to standard computer programs. Connection can be via a USB cable or the latest model available uses wireless technology.
